Wolf's Corner

Sachems, a small grass skipper, can be found throughout much of Iowa and U.S., although excluding most of the Rocky Mountains.  Due to warming temperatures, their range is expanding northward into Canada.  There can be three broods throughout our warm season.  Various grasses tend to be their host plants.  Their wingspan ranges from 35 to 41 mm and the sexes are dissimilar.  These two Sachems are males.

A total of 93 avian species (plus 6 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 10th highest August among 27 years of records.  August 2007 and 2021with 107 species remain as the highest August and August 2001 with 46 as the lowest.  This total is 14 species more than last month and 11 less than August 2023.

Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the Ring-billed Gull on the 1st may represent a new extreme early Fall record for Story County (former record set on 2 Aug 2003 & 2016 at Ada Hayden Heritage Park).

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, sa=sub-adult, nb=non-breeding, gos=goslings, d=ducklings, n=nestling), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 65th Supplement (2024) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 24th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
